Description
A rich, fruity, and warmly spiced vegan mincemeat pie filling made with molasses. This plant-based classic is perfect for holiday baking, tarts, or enjoying by the spoonful. It’s a make-ahead filling that captures the essence of traditional mincemeat without any animal products.
Ingredients
- 2 cups mixed dried fruit (raisins, currants, sultanas, dried cranberries)
- 1/2 cup chopped dried figs or dates
- 1/2 cup chopped dried apricots
- 1 small tart apple, finely chopped
- Zest and juice of 1 orange
- Zest and juice of 1 lemon
- 1/3 cup chopped nuts (almonds, pecans, or walnuts)
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, adjust to taste
- 1/4 cup coconut oil or vegan butter
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp allspice
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup brandy (optional, or orange juice)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Chop dried fruits into small, even pieces. Finely dice the apple and zest your citrus. Measure all ingredients.
- Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat: chopped dried fruits, apple, citrus zest and juice, brown sugar, molasses, coconut oil, spices, salt, nuts, and brandy (if using). Stir well.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The fruits should plump and the mixture should thicken and darken.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the mixture cool completely.
- Transfer the cooled vegan mincemeat filling into a clean jar or container for storage.
Notes
- This vegan mincemeat filling can be used immediately, but its flavor improves with time.
- Store in the fridge for up to two weeks or freeze for up to three months.
- Optional add-ins include chopped candied ginger or glace cherries. Pear can be used instead of apple for a milder flavor.
