Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 cup macaroni pasta (elbow or small shells)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (sharp or mild)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or panko)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon paprika or 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9 or 8×11-inch casserole dish.
  2. Cook the macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  4. Spread half of the cooked macaroni in the prepared dish.
  5. Press half of the meat mixture over the macaroni.
  6. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar over the meat layer.
  7. Repeat with the remaining macaroni, meat mixture, and top with the remaining cheese.
  8. Pour the milk evenly over the casserole.
  9. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 10-15 minutes until cheese is bubbly and the center is cooked through.
  10. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
