Description

Homemade Eggnog is a creamy beverage flavored with Christmas spices.


Ingredients

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ground cinnamon (to sprinkle on top)
  • alcohol (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, add the egg yolks and white sugar. Whisk until smooth and creamy.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, add the heavy whipping cream, milk, nutmeg, and salt. Stir frequently until it simmers.
  3. Stream a ladle of the cream over the egg mixture while whisking quickly. Repeat until the mixture is warm.
  4. Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and whisk for about a minute until combined and slightly thicker.
  5. Remove from heat, add a splash of vanilla and optional alcohol. Stir and set aside to cool.
  6. Once cooled, pour the eggnog through a fine mesh strainer into a jar or pitcher. Press the remaining liquid through the strainer and refrigerate until completely cool.
  7. Serve thick with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon, or blend with milk to thin before serving.

Notes

  • Adjust thickness by adding milk.
