Description
These soft and buttery sugar cookies are made with powdered sugar for an extra tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup powdered sugar (for rolling)
- ¼ cup rainbow sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract. Beat until fully combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
- Fold in the sprinkles if using.
- Cover the dough and chill for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough, roll into balls, and coat each in powdered sugar.
- Arrange on baking sheet 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 9–11 minutes, or until edges are just slightly golden. Centers should still look soft.
- Cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Store cookies in an airtight container for up to one week.
- You can substitute almond extract for vanilla for a different flavor.
