Description

A festive and flavorful Oktoberfest Maple Mustard Chicken Burger, featuring a juicy ground chicken patty infused with sweet maple syrup and tangy Dijon mustard, topped with melted Swiss cheese, zesty sauerkraut, and crispy fried onions on a toasted bun.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 cup crispy fried onions
  • 4 pretzel buns or hamburger buns, toasted
  • Optional: extra maple syrup and Dijon mustard for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, salt, pepper, maple syrup, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 portions and gently shape them into patties about 3/4-inch thick. Press a shallow dimple in the center of each patty.
  3. Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat (375–400 °F). Clean the grates and brush with oil.
  4. Place the patties on the grill and cook for 5–6 minutes per side, until the internal temperature reaches 165 °F. Avoid pressing down on the patties.
  5. In the last minute of grilling, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt. Toast the buns, cut side down, for 1–2 minutes until golden.
  6. Assemble the burgers: Place a cheesy patty on the bottom bun, top with sauerkraut, then crispy fried onions, and finally the top bun.
  7. Serve immediately, optionally with a drizzle of extra maple syrup and Dijon mustard.

Notes

  • For a different flavor, swap Swiss cheese for Gruyère or mild cheddar.
  • Standard hamburger buns can be used if pretzel buns are unavailable.
  • Reduce or omit crispy fried onions for a lighter version.
  • Add a smear of grainy mustard or a slice of pickle for extra bite.
  • Mix in cayenne or chili powder for more heat.
  • Store leftover patties separately from buns, sauerkraut, and fried onions in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat patties in a skillet or oven at 350 °F until warmed through. Toast buns and add toppings fresh before serving.
