Description
Homemade Italian herbs and cheese bread with a crispy crust, filled with aromatic herbs and melted cheeses. This bread is perfect as a side dish or a satisfying snack.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1¾ cups warm water (about 110 °F)
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons dried Italian herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Extra flour for dusting
Instructions
- Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour, salt, dried Italian herbs, mozzarella, and Parmesan to the yeast mixture. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding more flour if needed.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1-2 hours until doubled.
- Punch down the dough. Shape it into a loaf or place it in a greased bread pan. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 450 °F (230 °C). Place a shallow pan of water at the bottom of the oven to create steam.
- Bake the Italian herbs cheese bread for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped, or until the internal temperature reaches 200-210 °F.
- Let the Italian herbs cheese bread cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes to the dough.
- You can use different cheese combinations like cheddar, gouda, or asiago.
- Roasted garlic can be added for a sweeter flavor.
- Sesame seeds can be sprinkled on top for extra crunch.
- Can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days in an airtight bag.
- For longer storage, refrigerate for up to 5 days or freeze slices for up to 2 months.
- Reheat in the oven at 350 °F for 5-10 minutes or toast individual slices.
- If using fresh herbs, double the amount compared to dried.
- Cheese can be omitted for a simple Italian herb bread.
- A stand mixer with a dough hook can be used for kneading.
