- 2 cups all-purpose flour, spoon and leveled
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup dried fruit (currants, raisins, or chopped dried apricots)
- 1 egg, beaten (for glazing)
- 1/2 cup icing sugar (optional) + milk or water to thin
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until combined.
- Add the cold, cubed butter and cut it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the milk just until the dough comes together, then fold in the dried fruit.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently 3–4 times to form a disc.
- Roll or pat the dough to 1-inch thickness and cut out scones with a round cutter.
- Place the scones on the baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
- Optional: Drizzle with icing after baking for a sweet finish.
