- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Olive oil (for cooking)
Instructions
- Wash and slice the potatoes thinly using a mandoline or sharp knife, about 1/8-inch thick. Chop the onion and mince the garlic. Shred the cheeses if not already shredded.
- In a large skillet, heat a bit of olive oil and sauté the onions for 2-3 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Stir in garlic, paprika, thyme, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Cook 1 more minute. Drain excess fat and set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour, whisk for 1 minute, then slowly add beef broth followed by cream or milk. Whisk constantly until thickened. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer potatoes on the bottom, then ground beef mixture, then creamy sauce. Sprinkle a bit of mozzarella. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with cheddar on top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Uncover and bake 15–20 more minutes until top is golden and potatoes are tender.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley.
