Description
Chipped Beef on Toast is a classic comfort food featuring tender, smoky dried beef ribbons cooked in a creamy, spiced white sauce, served over toasted bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1–2 (2.25-oz) jars dried beef, roughly cut into ribbons
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt (optional)
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
- 2 cups milk, at room temperature
- 6 slices thick sliced bread, toasted
- Freshly minced parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Add the roughly cut dried beef and cook for 2-3 minutes until the beef darkens in color and begins to crisp slightly.
- Stir in the all-purpose flour, black pepper, optional salt, cayenne pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Cook this mixture for about 2 minutes until it turns golden.
- Gradually stir in the room temperature milk while whisking continuously. Continue whisking for approximately 5 minutes until the sauce starts to simmer and thickens.
- Toast the thick bread slices until golden and crisp. Arrange 1-2 slices on each plate, then generously pour the creamed chipped beef sauce over the toast. Optionally, garnish with freshly minced parsley before serving.
