Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean for juiciness)
  • 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs (for moisture)
  • 1 large egg (acts as a binder)
  • 1/3 cup marinara sauce (adds sweetness)
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard (for tang)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (for umami)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano (for flavor)
  • salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • 4 tbsp vegetable oil (for searing)
  • 1 yellow onion (finely diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 9 oz white button mushrooms (sliced)
  • 2 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth (for gravy base)
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch (for thickening)
  • 1/4 cup water (to mix with cornstarch)
  • salt and pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a skillet. Add finely diced onion and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic, cooking for an additional minute.
  2. Allow the onion mixture to cool slightly. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, egg, marinara sauce, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, dried oregano, black pepper, and salt. Mix gently and form into four oval patties.
  3. In the same skillet, add remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Carefully add patties and brown for 4-5 minutes on each side. Once golden, remove patties and set aside.
  4. In that same skillet, add sliced onion. Cook for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  5. Add sliced mushrooms to the pan with onions. Sauté for 5-6 minutes until golden and moisture has evaporated.
  6. Pour in beef broth, followed by onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water until smooth. Slowly add this mixture to the simmering gravy while stirring continuously to thicken.
  8. Return browned patties to the gravy and simmer for 5-7 minutes, letting flavors penetrate patties. Season with additional salt and pepper before serving.
