Savor Bobby Flay’s Mouthwatering Salisbury Steak Recipe
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean for juiciness)
- 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs (for moisture)
- 1 large egg (acts as a binder)
- 1/3 cup marinara sauce (adds sweetness)
- 1 tsp yellow mustard (for tang)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (for umami)
- 1 tsp dried oregano (for flavor)
- salt and black pepper (to taste)
- 4 tbsp vegetable oil (for searing)
- 1 yellow onion (finely diced)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 9 oz white button mushrooms (sliced)
- 2 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth (for gravy base)
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 3 tbsp cornstarch (for thickening)
- 1/4 cup water (to mix with cornstarch)
- salt and pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a skillet. Add finely diced onion and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic, cooking for an additional minute.
- Allow the onion mixture to cool slightly. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, egg, marinara sauce, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, dried oregano, black pepper, and salt. Mix gently and form into four oval patties.
- In the same skillet, add remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Carefully add patties and brown for 4-5 minutes on each side. Once golden, remove patties and set aside.
- In that same skillet, add sliced onion. Cook for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Add sliced mushrooms to the pan with onions. Sauté for 5-6 minutes until golden and moisture has evaporated.
- Pour in beef broth, followed by onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
- In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water until smooth. Slowly add this mixture to the simmering gravy while stirring continuously to thicken.
- Return browned patties to the gravy and simmer for 5-7 minutes, letting flavors penetrate patties. Season with additional salt and pepper before serving.
