- 0.5 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder

- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 0.5 cups black food coloring
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Optional garnishes: spooky sprinkles or meringue ghosts
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, and vinegar. Stir in the black food coloring until well blended.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Take care not to overmix.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
- In a large bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until fluffy.
- Once cooled, frost the top of one cake layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides.
- Add spooky decorations as desired.
